An older type of Alzmetall column drilling machine

Alzmetall is a German machine tool manufacturer based in Altenmarkt an der Alz in the Traunstein district . In the drilling machines business segment, Alzmetall describes itself as the market leader and refers to a total of around 200,000 drilling machines that have been delivered since the company was founded (as of 2018). The drilling machines division includes the manufacture of table, column , column and radial drilling machines . In addition, 3 to 5-axis machining centers in gantry design are offered, and there is also contract manufacturing of cast parts and mechanically machined parts. The company's own foundry has its own cupola furnace and mainly produces parts made of cast iron with lamellar graphite and nodular cast iron .

The company was founded in 1945 by Harald Friedrich and Peter Meier and in the same year received an operating license for precision engineering from the American occupation forces . The cupola furnace was pierced for the first time in 1946, and it wasn't until 1947 that drilling machines began to be manufactured, which today make up the majority of the company's operations. The export of the first machines abroad began as early as 1949 and was expanded over the following years. Milestones were the 10,000. manufactured drill in 1956 and the 50,000. 1970. At that time, customers already included several companies in the automotive industry and the Deutsche Bundesbahn . In 1990, with the takeover of Bluthardt AG from Nürtingen, a major competitor in the market for drilling machines was incorporated. There has been a location in Taicang, China, since 2015 . Donau Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH, a full subsidiary of Alzmetalls, offers further lines of radial drilling machines under the brand names Donauflex, Donaualpha, Donaumeric and Donauport.

In addition to the construction of machine tools, Alzmetall is also involved in the construction and maintenance of elevator systems through the Berlin company Gottschalk & Michaelis, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alzmetall . Gottschalk & Michaelis was founded in 1880 and is based in the Neukölln district .

The history of Alzmetall is linked to the history of the small car Spatz , which caused a sensation in the 1950s with its plastic body. Company founder Harald Friedrich acquired the license to manufacture the automobile and had it manufactured in the Alzmetall halls between 1954 and 1956. In 1956 Friedrich founded the Bayerische Autowerke in Traunreut together with the Victoria works .
