Amédée Emmanuel François Laharpe (born October 17, 1754 at Rolle VD , † May 8, 1796 in Codogno ) was a French Général de division of Swiss origin.

Life

Laharpe was a son of Louis-Philippe de la Harpe ; one of his cousins was the politician Frédéric-César de La Harpe . He was born at Château Hutins and spent his childhood there. He received his education from private tutors and then studied in Haldenstein .

He interrupted his studies several times to work as a mercenary in the Austrian Netherlands . After his final return to his homeland, he was entrusted with a military command in Vaud. Enthusiastic about the ideals of the revolution , he joined the revolutionaries.

His political (revolutionary) activities forced Laharpe to leave his homeland; he went to France and entered the army there. As early as 1792 he led a battalion . The following year he fought alongside Jean-François Carteaux in the siege of Toulon .

As a great admirer of Napoleon , Laharpe took part in his Italian campaign in 1796 and served on his staff alongside Charles Pierre François Augereau , André Masséna and Jean Sérurier . He fought valiantly at Montenotte (April 12, 1796), Dego (April 14/15, 1796), Mondovi (April 20/22, 1796) and at Fombio (May 7/9 , 1796).

On May 8th, Laharpe undertook a scouting ride between Fombio and Codogno. On his return he was accidentally shot by his own command (→ self- fire ). He died at the age of nearly 42 and found his final resting place on the edge of the battlefield.
