action

The shy Johnny is in a bar with his friend Jake and his girlfriend Shelley. Since he can not bring himself to bear, he is approached by the attractive Elizabeth. They meet up and become lovers, although Elizabeth does not say many words about her family and those around her. Her mother Sarah is married to Tim, Elizabeth's stepfather, but who is alcoholic and aggressive. Then there's Patrick, a very good family friend, and Kyle, a former lover of Elizabeth.

Elizabeth remains mysterious and seems to be unable to relate. One evening she confesses to Johnny that she was flinging with a complete stranger. Then Johnny goes home with Jake, completely disappointed. On the way home there is a terrible accident in which Jake gets off lightly, but Johnny sustains life-threatening injuries that leave no hope of survival. Elizabeth, her parents and Patrick are on site at the hospital. There Patrick meets his best friend, the ominous Seth. Seth, who watches over Elizabeth and her mother, is a vampire and bites Johnny in the neck to transform him and save his life. He takes him to his home unnoticed to prepare him for his new existence. In the meantime, Elizabeth is certain that Johnny is her only true love and goes in search of him. Seth contacts her and explains to her that he is her biological father. He himself became a vampire many years earlier through the sly Raven. He reveals the truth about Johnny to Elizabeth, which she accepts as she is overjoyed to be able to hug him again.

At a party, Johnny kills Kyle because he was provocative. Distraught, Elizabeth drives home alone while Seth and Johnny dispose of the body. The relationship falls into a serious crisis, and Johnny also argues with Seth. He changes increasingly to the negative and seeks out Raven, who, however, abuses her vampire qualities and kills people indiscriminately. Johnny sleeps with her and at first likes the situation. But he thinks about it and cuts off Raven's head to put an end to their hustle and bustle.

Meanwhile, out of love for Johnny, Elizabeth asks Seth to transform her as well. He categorically refuses, however, because Elizabeth should lead a real life. Without further ado she cuts her wrists open to force him to do it. The doctors can save her, and Johnny visits her to confess his unconditional love to her. Johnny and Seth drive home with Elizabeth just before sunrise. But Johnny stops in the middle of the street and explains to Elizabeth that he is tired of his vampire life and actually shouldn't be alive anymore. Seth also joins them. Both have decided to expose themselves to the approaching daylight and thus die. With a heavy heart, Elizabeth tearfully accepts the decision, knowing that Johnny is right. She gets back in the car and drives on while Johnny and Seth stare together at the first rays of sunshine.

criticism

“Certainly one of the more unusual vampire films of recent times: Ignoring any references to the horror film, Brad Ellis tells his story initially as a cryptic love story and only lets the bloodsucker elements flow into the plot late. The result is an effective, thoughtfully narrated drama with young, unknown actors, especially Matthew Stiller and Rachel Miles, who are definitely a pleasure to watch. "

“Daylight Fades depicts a transitional state that is also loss. Instead of chaste vegetarians, Ellis' vampires are predators who are at the mercy of their hunting instinct. Johnny's growing thirst for blood is the flip side of his previous reluctance, which seems a form of self-punishment. Like Elizabeth and Seth, he forces himself into a loneliness that awaits all characters. A gloomy morning awaits you at the end of the video horror, which despite its dramaturgical weaknesses and a visibly low budget is more coherent than its genre relatives in the cinema mainstream. "
