Am Holzgraben in Hanover describes a street in what is now the Oststadt district . The name of the connection from Wedekindstrasse to Kleine Pfahlstrasse is reminiscent of the old path along the Holzgraben. A - reproduced - city map of Hanover under the title "Honovere um 1400" showed the former Faulgraben as "Falegraven", which already in the Middle Ages flowed from the east into the city moat that enclosed Hanover as part of the city fortifications . In the 19th century the wooden ditch formed the edge of the Eilenriede and led from the New House to the Lister Tower . However, the old route was only given its official name, which is still valid today , at the time of the Kingdom of Hannover in 1845.

However, until the 19th century, the ground around the wooden trench was swampy and smelly, due to the groundwater that was still rising here at the Eilenriede, to which there were no crossings such as bridges or dams without dry feet. It was not until the Hohenzollernstrasse was built in 1888 that the conditions were fundamentally improved and the defects eliminated.
