Am Stern is the name of a square and traffic junction in the Schwachhausen district of Bremen .
History and environment
The square was created as a traffic junction around 1905, when Kaiser-Friedrich- Strasse (since 1947 Hermann-Böse- Strasse) was extended to Holler Allee and the surrounding area was built on. The Bürgerpark was pushed back behind Hollerallee, so that today its southern corner between Hollerallee and Parkallee touches the “star”.
During the construction work, tram tracks were also laid in Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße. In 1905 the “Stern” was initially the final stop for the tram. The route was later continued through Wachmannstrasse to Kulenkampffallee and Riensberg. The “Am Stern” stop is served by tram lines 6 and 8; the stop is at the junction with Wachmannstraße . The bus line 24 also stops at Stern, with stops at the beginning of Hollerallee (east).
The square is framed by some large town houses and a gas station. The house on the east side of the square was used as the seat of the regional labor court until 2008 . In front of the house there has been a marble sculpture “Photo Call” by the Bremen sculptor Hans-J since 2006. Müller.
Roundabout
Six streets meet at the traffic junction. The traffic routing is a roundabout . A red colored, structurally not separated cycle lane ensures that this node, in contrast to differently designed nodes with such a high volume of traffic, does not disadvantage cycle traffic, but rather favors it. From Parkallee (from the north) into Hollerallee (to the west) there is a right-turn lane that leads past the circle and is driven on by cars at higher speeds than the actual roundabout. The tram tracks run through the center island; by tram to give priority to private transport is for tram crossings with two need traffic lights stopped. One of them also facilitates the entry of buses from the city center. Because of the tram running right through it and because the ERA allows separate cycle paths as cycle traffic facilities at roundabouts , but no cycle lanes, sign 215 (roundabout) was not placed. The star is a hotspot for accidents.
Conversions
There are repeated efforts to convert the star into a traffic light intersection (contrary to the national and international trend of replacing traffic light intersections with roundabouts). It is doubtful whether a traffic light would reduce the number of accidents and avoid traffic jams; it is certain that the attractiveness for cycling would decrease.
2011
After various suggestions for improving traffic safety had been made, none of which offered outstanding prospects of success, the expense of a questionable conversion was avoided. Instead, the traffic routing was provisionally changed in 2011 and therefore slightly changed with yellow markings: In order to reduce the radius of the circle for motor vehicles, to reduce the number of overtaking maneuvers on the ring road and to improve the angle of vision between leaving cars and cyclists driving on the outer ring lane Hatched restricted areas are marked between the ring lane of motorized traffic and that of bicycle traffic. The number of accidents stayed the same.
2017
For this reason, prepared by several expert reports, the geometry of the de facto Stern roundabout was changed more strongly by a renovation in June / July 2017:
- The diameter of the central island was reduced from 38 m to 30 m in order to reduce the driving speed on the ring road.
- Because of the speeds and to reduce confusing situations, the ring road has been narrowed so much that it can only be used with one lane. The strip along the inboard curb for tow curves of trucks and buses was marked, not rough paved.
- The space gained between the ring road and the cycle lane is just wide enough that a car can wait across or diagonally between the two. Here, bend in and out curves were marked, limited by hatched blocked areas. Before that, car drivers willing to turn off had a very poor view of cyclists on the bicycle ring because both were driving side by side on curved lanes. Now the bender and the cyclist drive towards each other at an angle of 40 ° to 80 ° and can see each other well.
- Most of the bicycle entrances have been designed somewhat angularly so that cyclists can enter the ring lane more carefully and pay attention to their right of way. At the confluence of the southern part of Parkallee, which is designated as a bicycle street, this was hardly possible.
