Johann Hermann Holler (born August 7, 1818 in Bremen , † December 31, 1868 in Bremen) was a merchant and promoter of the Bremen Bürgerpark .

biography

Holler was the second son of the estate manager Melchior Holler in Bremen- Hastedt , who was later registered as a customs collector in Warturm . The old Bremen family was already resident in Bremen in the 15th century and brought u. a. the mayor Johann Holler (1674–1742), the senators Melchior Holler (1708–1761) and Johann Holler (1745–1796) and the parent Cord Holler (1584 councilor). Holler was also related to Mayor Johann Smidt .

Holler attended preschool and business school in Bremen . When his father died in 1828, his uncle Johann Holler and Johann Smidt's eldest son became his guardians. It is believed that he also grew up in the Smidt house. He began his commercial apprenticeship in 1834 at the import company J. and G. Höpken and stayed with the company until 1843. He married in 1844 and again in 1848 after the early death of his wife.

Businessman and politician

In 1844 he became a partner in a coffee and tobacco company. Around 1847 he founded the tobacco company Holler & Grote with FW Grote , with which he had great success. In 1852 he was elected to the Bremen citizenship for the merchant class . From 1853 he was a member of the road construction deputation and from 1855 the deputation for dyke regulations. From 1854 to 1860 he was administrator of the citizenship for the St. Remberti Stift . When St. Remberti community he was from 1845 deacon and from 1855 to 1868 church council . In 1859 he became a member of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce . His candidacy for Senator of Bremen (1860) was unsuccessful. In 1860/61 he fell ill with pulmonary tuberculosis and resigned from his political offices. He spent the following four winters in the south in Hyères and in Pau (both in the south of France) and recovered until 1865. His company flourished and expanded the trade in tobacco, cotton and petroleum.

Bürgerpark co-founder

Holler was u. a. from 1853 in the deputation for the Bürgerweide . In 1855, on Holler's initiative, the southern (oak avenue) and eastern edge paths on the Bürgerweide were laid out and greened, and in 1858 various groups of trees were planted on the Bürgerweide. In the summer of 1865, the Second German Federal Shooting took place on the bare Bürgerweide. The participants suffered from the intense heat. The idea of ​​a shooting range under trees came up. The main idea generator was Holler. In 1865 the association for foresting the Bürgerweide  - today's Bürgerparkverein - was founded. Holler was then an important sponsor of the Bürgerpark.

Honors

  • The former oak avenue in the south of the Bürgerpark was renamed Hollerallee after him in 1869 .
  • The Hollersee in front of the Parkhotel Bremen was named after him.
