Amaechi Igwe (born May 20, 1988 in Belmont , California ) is an American football player who also has a Nigerian passport.

Career

Igwe first played as a striker at Santa Clara University . After just one year, he moved to New England Revolution in Major League Soccer in 2007 . There he initially played in the second team, he made his professional debut on April 9, 2008 in the game against the Kansas City Wizards . In 2008 he and his team won the North American Super League . In the following two seasons he played regularly, but could not fight for a regular place.

For the 2010/11 season Igwe moved free of charge to newly promoted FC Ingolstadt in the 2nd Bundesliga . Due to a serious knee injury, which he sustained in the pre-season, Igwe could not be used in the entire first half of the season. He played his first competitive game after the long injury break on April 16, 2011 for the second team of Ingolstadt in the fifth-class Bayernliga . Igwe did not appear in the first team in the following years and after the season both parties agreed to terminate the contract.

For the 2011/12 season Igwe joined the third division club SV Babelsberg 03 . He made his first appearance for the Potsdam team when he lost 2-0 in the first round of the DFB Cup against MSV Duisburg on July 30, 2011. Just three days later, he made his debut against Rot-Weiß Erfurt in the third round . League .

National team

Igwe played for the US U-17 national team and took part with the U-20 team in the 2007 U-20 World Cup, where the US reached the quarter-finals.

His father Tony Igwe took part in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico for Nigeria and was the captain of the Nigerian national soccer team from 1969 to 1973 . His brother Kelechi and sister Chioma also played for the Santa Clara Broncos.
