Map of the Amami Islands |
Amami-Ōshima ( Japanese 奄 美 大 島 , German "large Amami island") is an island in the Pacific Ocean belonging to the Amami group . It is part of the Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima . Amami-Ōshima has an area of 712.35 km² and ranks fifth among the “other” islands in Japan next to the four main islands.
Administratively, the island is divided into the city of Amami and the district of Ōshima . The city of Amami was created on March 20, 2006 through the merger of the city of Naze , the municipality of Kasari and the village of Sumiyō . The district of Ōshima is further divided into the community of Tatsugō and the villages of Yamato and Uken and part of the village of Setouchi .
Economically, the island lives from agriculture, traditional handicrafts and tourism. Rice , sugar cane and sweet potatoes are grown . The favorable climate allows two rice harvests a year. Traditional craftsmanship includes the production of high quality handcrafted silk, which has suffered from the abandonment of traditional Japanese clothing and competition from Korea.
The music hit Shima-uta from The Boom (1992) is based on Amami's folk songs .
Amami-Oshima has Amami Airport .
history
For the first time, the island of Amami - here 海 見 geschrieben 'sea view island' written - is mentioned in a document in the Nihon Shoki in 657 . In ancient times the island served as the southern waypoint of the Japanese ambassadors to the court of Tang China (618–907). Over time, the island was forgotten until an anji (feudal lord) reached the island in the Middle Ages . In the 15th century the island became part of the Ryūkyū Kingdom . In 1609 the kingdom of Ryūkyū was conquered by the Japanese Satsuma - han and in 1611 also Amami.
