Amanda Duff

Amanda Duff (born March 6, 1914 in Fresno , California - April 6, 2006 in San Francisco , California) was an American actress .

biography

Amanda Duff grew up in Santa Barbara and initially studied music at Mills College in Oakland . The renowned writer and screenwriter Robert E. Sherwood discovered the budding musician in 1936 and gave her her first Broadway engagement as an actress and singer in his production Tovarich .

After two years as a stage actress, she made her feature film debut in the Shirley Temple comedy Just around the Corner in 1938 . This was followed by appearances in productions such as the film noir City of Chance , in Gregory Ratoff's drama Hotel for Women as well as the female lead in the drama The Escape , in the crime drama Mr. Moto and the mysterious island (based on the crime novels by John P. Marquand with Peter Lorre in the title role) and directed by Edward Dmytryk in the horror film The Devil Commands (with Boris Karloff ).

She met screenwriter Philip Dunne while working for 20th Century Fox . The two married on July 15, 1939. From this marriage there were three children. Amanda Duff then retired from the film business and worked as a photographer for a while . Her pictures of American children were among others. a. shown by designers Charles and Ray Eames as part of their presentation at the American National Exhibition in Moscow in 1959.

In addition, Amanda Duff was committed to women's rights in California . During the Cold War , the Dunnes and the Committee for the First Amendment, co-founded by Philip Dunne, supported numerous filmmakers who were banned from the profession by the Committee on Un-American Activities .

Philip Dunne died on June 2, 1992. His widow Amanda Duff Dunne died on 6 April 2006 at her home in San Francisco a cancer .
