Ambitle is the largest and southernmost island of the Feni Islands ( Tabar Islands ) in the Pacific , north of New Ireland in the Bismarck Archipelago , which is part of Papua New Guinea , New Ireland Province . It is part of the Tabar - Lihir - Tanga - Feni island chain .

Ambitle is separated from the island of Babase by the Salat Strait, which is only 100 m wide . The 87 km² island is rugged, rocky and densely forested.

On the island is the 450 meter high Ambitle , a Plio-Pleistocene stratovolcano with a 3 km central caldera and various lava domes . During the last major eruption of the Ambitle 2300 years ago, a maar formed east of the dome . On the west side of the caldera, not far from the central lava dome, there is strong volcanic activity with hot and boiling springs, mud pots and solfataras .

Hydrothermal springs in the shallow water of the coral reefs at Tutum Bay in the west of the island release high concentrations of arsenic and thus indicate gold deposits .

On Ambitle 2006 by New Guinea Gold Corporation and Vangold Resources Ltd carried out test drilling and mapping, as a gold deposit is suspected on the island, which is similar to large gold resources, such as the deposit Ladolam on the neighboring island of Lihir Island , Lihir Group might possess.
