The Tanga Islands are a group of islands in Papua New Guinea , 55 km northeast of New Ireland . They belong to the Province of New Ireland and the Bismarck Archipelago . The largest islands are Malendok (35 km²) and Boang (27 km²), smaller islands are Lif, Tefa, Bitlik and Bitbok. The Tanga Islands are the smallest islands of the Tabar - Lihir -Tanga- Feni -Inselkette .
The archipelago was discovered by Abel Tasman in April 1643 . They were also called Anthony Caens Islands , Caen Islands or D'Oraison group . From 1885 to 1899 the Tanga Islands belonged to the so-called " German Protected Area " and from 1899 to 1914 to the colony of German New Guinea . In 1914 the islands were conquered by Australian troops and administered as a mandate of the League of Nations of Australia after World War I. Since 1975 they have been part of the independent state of Papua New Guinea.
