Dannhauser ( English Dannhauser Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the Amajuba district of the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative seat of the municipality is located in the city of the same name, Dannhauser . The ANC has the majority in the local council. Mayor is JP Phakathi.

The parish is named after the German settler Renier Dannhauser, who bought four farms (Rocky, Spruit, Palmietfontein, Cornwall and Klipkuil) from the government in 1872. He was buried on the premises of the Palmietfontein farm. Since then, the area has been called Dannhauser.

geography

The community of Dannhauser is located in the northwest of KwaZulu-Natal. It is the southernmost of the three parishes in the district. In the north it borders on the municipalities of Newcastle and eMadlangeni . To the south are Endumeni in the Umzinyathi district and Alfred Duma in Uthukela . Dannhauser shares a short border in the east with the province of Free State .

Most of the Ntshingwayo Dam (also: Chelmsford Dam ) is in the parish. Part of the northern and eastern parish boundaries are defined by the Buffalo River , and many rivers run through the parish. The most important are the Ngagane and the uMzinyathi . The N11 runs through the municipality. The R68 and the R621 flow into the national road in the municipality. Dannhauser also has a connection to the railway line from Durban to Johannesburg .

Dannhauser is a rural community. Only 10 percent of households are in urban areas. Hence, unemployment and poverty are also major problems. Two thirds of the population are dependent on social benefits.

The most important economic sectors in the municipality of Dannhauser are agriculture and mining, although the latter is becoming less and less important after the mines have been closed. In agriculture, livestock and arable farming are the main activities.

In 2011 the community had 102,161 inhabitants. Of these, 97.5% were black, 1.4% Indians or Asians and 0.8% white. The first language was 93.5% isiZulu , 2.1% English and 0.8% isiNdebele .

  • Ntshingwayo Dam , one of the largest reservoirs in KwaZulu-Natal with opportunities for water sports and other recreational activities.
  • Chelmsford Nature Reserve , a 1,000 acre nature reserve on the Ngagane River . The park surrounds the Ntshingwayo Dam .
