Endumeni ( English Endumeni Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the Umzinyathi district of South Africa in the KwaZulu-Natal province . The municipality's administrative headquarters are in Dundee . The IFP provides the minority government in the local council.

The name of the community comes from Endumeni Mountain , the highest peak in the Biggarsberg mountain range. Endumeni (also: Indumeni ) is the isiZulu word for “Where the thunder rolls”. Lightning often strikes the hill. The parish covers an area of ​​1610 square kilometers. In 2011 the community had 64,862 inhabitants according to the census.

Endumeni is located in the middle between Johannesburg and Durban and lies in the geographical center of the northern KwaZulu-Natals at the foot of the Biggarsberg Mountains . The municipality is well connected in terms of traffic: several regional roads run through the municipality ( R33 , R68 , R602 ). The infrastructure for rail and air traffic is also well developed.

In 2011 the community had 64,862 inhabitants. Of these, 83.9% were black, 7.2% white, 5.9% Indian or Asian and 2.6% colored .

The first language was 76.3% isiZulu , 11.8% English, 5.1% Afrikaans and 0.9% isiNdebele .

economy

Endumeni is also the economic center of the north of the province. The main source of income is agriculture. In the municipality there is mainly cattle breeding. The cattle markets held here are profitable. In addition to cattle, there is also sheep breeding, dairy farming and arable farming.

The coal mining was once the main economic factor of the northern KwaZulu-Natal. Although its importance has diminished, this industry is still important to the region.

  • The Isibindi Eco-Reserve is a nature reserve with an area of ​​more than 1,600 hectares with different habitats from mountainous grassy areas and steppe landscape in the valleys to forests on rivers; the nature reserve is home to a large number of native animal species
  • Dundee is located in the historic battlefields of the Zulu and Boer wars (including the battles at Blood River and Isandhlwana ). Some of the battlefields can be visited. There are also reconstructions of buildings and command posts from the war.
