The Ngagane River (also Ingagane ) is a river in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal .

course

It has its source in the northern KwaZulu-Natal- Drakensberg at an altitude of 1322 meters. Further east it flows through the Ntshingwayo Dam (formerly Chelmsford Dam) and past Newcastle and Madadeni . At Masondale , the Ngagane flows into the Buffalo River .

Naming

The name comes from the isiZulu language. There are different interpretations of the meaning. One meaning is 'the unexpected' with reference to the spring tides that occur . Because of the dichrostachys and acacias growing along the shore , 'thorn tree river' could also be a meaning. Another meaning is 'skeletal flow'.

ecology

There are many industries in the Newcastle area. The river has already been poisoned twice by leaking chemicals. In 1999, as a result of a burst pipe in a chemical factory, liquids containing chromate ran into the river. The largest chrome chemical production in Africa is located here. In 2012, Dundee's drinking water supply was threatened due to the presence of cyanides in the river.
