eMadlangeni (formerly Utrecht ; English eMadlangeni Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of Amajuba in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The municipality's administrative headquarters are in Utrecht . Chris Mabaso is the mayor. The ANC has the majority in the local council.
The municipality covers an area of 3539 square kilometers.
geography
eMadlangeni is located in the northwest of KwaZulu-Natal. In the north the municipality borders on the province of Mpumalanga and in the east on eDumbe and AbaQulusi in the district of Zululand . To the south of the parish are Nquthu and Endumeni in the Umzinyathi district and to the east are Dannhauser and Newcastle . The western boundary of the parish is defined by the Buffalo River and part of the western boundary is the Blood River . The Slang River , the Pongola and the Bivane have their source in eMadlangeni. Many other small rivers have their source in the municipality. The main roads in the municipality are the R33 and R34 . The N11 leads west past the community and can be reached via the R34. In terms of area, eMadlangeni is the largest municipality in the district, but only about 6 percent of the district's population live here, of which about 10 percent are in urban areas.

The main economic sector in the municipality is agriculture. It is mainly used for cattle breeding. The district is KwaZulu-Natal's main wool supplier. The land is almost too dry for arable farming and very little arable land is irrigated. Another economic factor in the municipality is tourism. In addition to two game reserves (altogether 2500 hectares) there are several good opportunities for trout fishing. There are few trained workers for other branches of the economy. Over 50 percent of the households in the municipality have no income of their own.

In 2011 the community had 34,442 inhabitants. Of these, 92.7% were black, 5.7% white and 1.2% colored .
First language was 84.4% isiZulu , 5.9% Afrikaans and 1.6% English.
