Sketch of the features

The Yellow parasitic wasp ( Amblyteles armatorius ) is a parasitic wasp from the subfamily of Ichneumoninae , tribe Ichneumonini .

features

The black and yellow banded slender parasitic wasps reach a body length of 12-16 mm. The feelers are 9 mm long. In the females the basal antennae are reddish. Otherwise the sensors are black. The black head has a yellow mark on the inner edge of the compound eyes. The pronotum is black, the scutellum is yellow. The abdomen has yellow-black banding, whereby the yellow bands are narrower in the females. The femora (thighs) of the two front pairs of legs have a black spot. With the exception of the basal end, the femora of the rearmost pair of legs are colored black. The apical end of the tibia (splints) of the rear legs is also black. The females do not have a long laying stinger . The coloring of the ichneumon is the mimicry of aculeata for protection from predators.

Occurrence and habitat

The yellow parasitic wasp is common in the western Palearctic (large parts of Europe, North Africa) and in the Orientalis (Middle East). The insects are often found on the edges of forests, clearings and hedges. The parasitic wasps can be found in summer on the flowers of umbellifers (Apiaceae) (especially hogweed ( Heracleum ) and angelica ( Angelica )) as well as on thistles and blackberry bushes , where they absorb plant nectar.

Way of life

The host of the yellow parasitic wasp is the mother's caterpillar ( Noctua pronuba, an owl butterfly).

Copulation probably takes place immediately after hatching in early summer. The Amblyteles parasitic wasps are observed both in May through July and in late summer and fall. But it is not about two generations. But in the time in between, the female wasps "summer". The females can be found especially in buildings on hilltops. For example, they can be found regularly in the pilgrimage church on the Hohen Peißenberg in Upper Bavaria, on the Schneekoppe in the Giant Mountains and on the Schmücke in Thuringia in cool rooms during the summer months. They can also be found in caves during the summer. The females probably need the summer dormancy to mature the eggs. After the summer break, the parasitic wasps look for the housemother's caterpillars and lay their eggs in them. Remarkably, the hosts also have a summer break (although both sexes). In the next year, in early summer, the adults of the parasitic wasps hatch.
