Ambros Stierlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ambros Stierlin (born April 21, 1767 in Säckingen ; † September 21, 1806 in the Mariastein Monastery ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk , collegiate bandmaster, composer and organist of the Mariastein Monastery.

Life

P. Ambros (Franz) Stierlin was born in Säckingen as the son of councilor Franz Stierlin. He studied in Mariastein and made his profession on November 1, 1789 . He was ordained a priest on June 19, 1791. He then worked as a professor of philosophy and theology at the in-house theological school.

His actual field of activity was music, where he shaped the musical life of the Mariasteiner Konvent at the end of the 18th century as a collegiate bandmaster, organist and composer. P. Ambros Stierlin earned a special merit by introducing the then largely unknown works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn in copies and early prints in Mariastein and thus contributing to an unusually early reception of the works of the so-called “Viennese Classic”.

When the French revolutionary troops invaded in 1798, P. Ambros returned to Säckingen. The other station in exile was St. Märgen Monastery in the Black Forest. On June 6, 1804, Father Ambros Stierlin returned to Mariastein and took over the management of the school opened in the pilgrim inn for the children of the area. P. Ambros died on September 21, 1806.
