Ambrose Kingsland

Ambrose Cornelius Kingsland (born May 24, 1804 in New York City , †  October 13, 1878 there ) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1853 he was Mayor of New York City.

Career

Nothing is known about Ambrose Kingsland's youth and schooling. Later he was a successful trader in sperm oil, a whale oil . In doing so, he made considerable fortune. Politically, he joined the Whig Party , founded in the 1830s . In 1851 he was elected Mayor of New York City. He held this office for a term between 1851 and 1853. At that time, the legal requirements for the establishment of Central Park were created, which was then completed in 1873. Until 1898, the urban area of ​​New York essentially extended to what is now Manhattan . After the end of his time as mayor, Ambrose Kingsland was no longer politically active. He died on October 13, 1878.
