Ambrosius Walter Schneider OCist (born November 14, 1911 in Mainz , † June 21, 2002 in Großlittgen ) was a German Cistercian abbot and historian.

life and work

Schneider entered the Himmerod Monastery in 1931 after graduating from the Mainz Marienschule (today the Bischöfliches Willigis Gymnasium ) , where he studied theology and was ordained a priest in 1936. In 1937 he became an archivist. During the Second World War he was employed as a medical sergeant in the Benedictine Abbey of St. Hildegard in Eibingen , which was dissolved by the National Socialists . After two years of French captivity, he studied at the University of Mainz from 1948 and received his doctorate in 1951 with the dissertation The Cistercian Abbey of Himmerod in the Late Middle Ages. Contributions to its history (Himmerod 1954 = sources and treatises of the Middle Rhine church history 1).

In Himmerod, Schneider worked as a lecturer in church and art history and campaigned for the reconstruction of the baroque abbey church (1952–1960), the interior of which he significantly influenced. In 1963 he was appointed to the liturgical commission of the Cistercian Order and in 1966 to the preparatory commission of the General Chapter 1968/1969 and stayed frequently in Rome. From 1965 to 1967 he was editor of the Analecta Cisterciensia yearbook . His research in Florence and the Vatican in 1971 led to the recognition of the cult of Blessed David of Himmerod in the entire Cistercian order. Schneider was administrator from 1971 to 1972 and abbot of Himmerod from 1972 to 1991.
