American Airlines Flight 587 was an American Airlines scheduled flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Santo Domingo . On November 12, 2001, an Airbus A300 crashed on this route in the city of New York City in the borough of Queens . In the accident, caused by the copilot's incorrect reaction to turbulence in the take-off phase, all 260 occupants of the aircraft and five people died on the ground.
Aircraft
The Airbus A300-605R used had the production number MSN420 and the registration number N14053 and was handed over to American Airlines on July 12, 1988, which had operated it continuously since then.
the accident
Shortly after take-off in New York, the Airbus A300 flew through wake vortices over the borough of Queens , which had been generated by a previously launched Boeing 747 . The copilot who was flying the aircraft at the time reacted to the turbulence with a series of violent full deflections of the rudder in both directions. The operating limits of the aircraft were exceeded, whereupon the rudder unit and later the engines broke off. The plane could no longer be steered and crashed almost vertically into a housing estate.
False alarm on suspicion of terrorism
Two months after the attacks of September 11, 2001 , another terrorist attack was feared, the three New York airports and several tunnels and bridges in the city were closed; the Empire State Building was evacuated. The security measures were lifted on the same day.
causes
The accident report named deficiencies in training as a major cause of the copilot's misconduct. It was shown that many pilots were of the opinion that all rudder movements were permitted below the maneuvering speed . But that is not the case - only a single rudder may deflect to the maximum, but also not in changing directions.
media
In the fifth episode of the 13th season of the Canadian television documentary series Mayday - Alarm im Cockpit , a reconstruction of the accident was shown in the episode "The Queens Disaster".
