The American Bashkir Curly Horse - also short Curly Horse - is a North American horse breed. Characteristic are the curly deck - and long hair , for which a dominant "curly gene" is responsible.
Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .
Exterior
The American Bashkir Curly Horse has a height of 140 to 165 cm. It often has slanted, slit-looking eyes and the eyelashes are curved upwards. The hooves are hard and almost circular. The Curlys are available in all colors.
Curly fur
The winter coat is long and curly, the summer coat is smooth to slightly wavy. The mane and tail are wavy. In some Curlys, the mane and tail are shed when the coat changes in spring and then grow back again. The hair in the ears is also curly.
It has meanwhile been proven that the American Bashkir Curly Horse is not related to the Bashkir from the Russian steppe, which is also curly . Images and descriptions of curled horses are also known from other parts of the world. To this day it is unclear whether these are also horses with the dominant gene of the American Curlys, and what origin the American Curly is.
Horse hair allergy sufferers should not have an allergic reaction to the other texture of the curly fur and its skin. Sometimes there are also straight- haired curlys, also called straight curlys . They too have this different skin type and should be suitable for allergy sufferers. A recent study failed to confirm this claim.
American Bashkir Curly Horses do not have the typical horse smell, but rather smell of lambswool. Also, the coat dries much faster after a rain than other horse breeds.
interior
The American Bashkir Curly Horse is a sturdy horse that can survive in harsh winter conditions. The American Curlys are consistently very calm horses with strong nerves. They learn quickly and are very reliable to humans.
Breeding history
The origin of the American Bashkir Curly Horse is unclear. It has been proven that the Crow and Sioux tribes had occasional curled horses as early as the early 19th century. In 1898, the farmer Peter Damele and his father discovered a herd of curled wild horses in Nevada and captured them. It is unclear whether these were related to the curled horses of the Indians. The Dameles bred with them, crossing the sturdy wild horses with their ranch horses. The Arabian stallion Nevada Red and later the Morgan stallion Ruby Red King were also used. The curly fur and the robust, friendly nature of the Curlys were inherited dominantly. Neighbors of the farmers soon started using Curlys in their breeding, although no emphasis was placed on pure breeding from the original herd. This resulted in a wide range of curly types that have a curly coat in common. There has been a breeding register since 1971.
