Life

When asked for his name, he replied, “My mother smoked hash . She was a hippie . I'm not sure how else to put it. ”He also writes on his website:“ She claims a woman she knew from college who named her daughter 'America' inspired her to use the name. She also told me that she was thinking about me 'Obnard'; to call. She has always been a very eccentric and creative person. "

McGee says he became interested in computers when he was eleven or twelve years old. He dropped out of high school early at the age of 17 and worked as an auto mechanic until he was 20. He was eventually discovered by John Carmack and employed by the developer id Software . There McGee was level designer and part of the development team for computer games such as Doom and Doom 2: Hell on Earth , as well as Quake and Quake II .

After his dismissal from id Software, McGee got an offer in 1998 from the publisher Electronic Arts or its studio Maxis . The contacts to Rogue Entertainment , which ultimately resulted in American McGee's Alice , his first own development work , also date from this time . The game is based on the children's story Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll , but gives the scenario a dark, threatening aspect and was therefore also referred to as twisted fairy tale (German: twisted fairy tale ).

After leaving EA, McGee founded The Mauretania Import Export Company (TMIEC) and worked as Creative Director for Enlight Software and Music Video Director for Radical Media . For Enlight he was the executive producer of the developer studio Mercury Steam Entertainment on American McGee presents Scrapland . Then he developed the title Bad Day LA with Enlight. In collaboration with Atari, McGee worked on another twisted fairy tale in the fairy tale world of Oz . However, due to funding problems on the part of Ataris, American McGee's Oz was discontinued.

McGee eventually moved to Shanghai, where he founded the Spicy Horse development studio . With his new studio he developed the episode title American McGee's Grimm for the online distributor Gametap in the tradition of twisted fairy tales . In 2011 he worked with Spicy Horse for Electronic Arts, a follow-up to American McGee's Alice entitled Alice: Madness Returns .

On August 4, 2013, thanks to Kickstarter.com, McGee's current work "Alice: Otherlands", a 3D animated short film series, was successfully funded. It is expected to be completed by December 2014.
