In their now more than 50-year history, the magazine has several times the publisher , their appearance manner changed and her title. It was first published in 1956 as a yearbook for American studies in the University Press Winter in Heidelberg.

With Volume 19 (1974) she moved to the Metzler publishing house in Stuttgart and has now appeared as a half-yearly publication under the title Amerikastudien with the English parallel title American Studies .

Volume 25 (1980) switched to the quarterly publication that is still valid today. In 1982 the magazine moved to Wilhelm Fink Verlag in Munich. Since volume 42 (1997) it has been published again by Winter in Heidelberg.

In the first volume, Walther Fischer was named as the only editor. Content and purpose

The American Studies see itself as an American specialist organ. In terms of content, the literary and cultural studies predominate , but the inclusion of historical , social and political science as well as educational contributions is increasingly being sought, which is guaranteed in particular by themed booklets that now alternate with the normal booklets.

In addition to specialist articles, the magazine primarily publishes book reviews; longer works are published in a series that has been published since 1957 - initially as supplements to the yearbook for American studies , now under the title American Studies / Monograph Series .

The contributions appear in German or English, although the English-language share has increased significantly over the years in the course of an increasingly international orientation.
