Ames is a small town in Liberty County in the US state of Texas in the United States of America .
geography
The city is located in southeast Texas on the Leon River , about 80 kilometers to the east from Louisiana , about 60 kilometers to the south from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 8.2 km², without any significant water surface. The distance to Houston in the southwest is approximately 80 kilometers.
history
The city was named after William Ames , an early settler in the area and later a railway official. The first post office opened in 1893 and the first telephone connection was established in 1905. The place only got a connection to the public power grid in 1941. The school, which until then had been looked after by two teachers, closed in 1940 and the students were driven to neighboring Gatesville every day . The post office was closed in 1957, as was the only church on site.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 1079 people in 407 households and 293 families lived here. The population density was 131.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population is made up of 7.04% White, 89.34% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 1.58% other ethnic groups. About 1.48% are of two or more races, and 1.58% of the population are Spanish or Latin American.
Of the 407 households, 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 42.3% of them were married couples living together. 24.8% were single mothers and 27.8% were non-families. 25.1% of all households were single households and 9.1% had people living there who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.18.
28.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2% 18 to 24, 25.3% 25 to 44, 24.7% 45 to 64, and 13.5% were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 89.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 83.4 men.
