Amitai Sandy , actually Amitai Sanderovich (* 1976 in Kfar Saba ) is an Israeli cartoonist and comic author .

job

Sandy studied visual communication at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem . As a student, he published the comic magazine Penguins' Perversions , of which 21 issues appeared. In 2003 he founded the Dimona Comix Group with four artist friends , which publishes in English in order to appeal to an international audience. The comic anthologies focus on the alienation and fears of young Israelis in the current Middle East conflict . In addition to working for Dimona, Sandy also publishes in Hebrew . Together with Uri Ashi , he founded Ashisandy Studios in 2004, which among other things publish illustrated new translations of classic children's books. His work has also appeared in various daily newspapers in Israel, such as Jedi'ot Acharonot , Haaretz and The Marker. He is considered the representative of the activist wing of the current Israeli comic scene, with uncompromising black humor that anticipated and influenced the emergence of a generation of nihilistic youth who reject the existing ideals.

"Israeli Anti-Semitic Cartoon Contest"

In response to the International Holocaust Caricature Competition , Sandy and Eyal Zusman called for the 2006 Israeli Anti-Semitic Cartoons Contest , in which only Jewish cartoonists should take part. Both cash prizes and "our great matzo bread , baked with the blood of Christian children" were announced as prizes . The jury for the competition included Art Spiegelmann (" Mouse "), a long-time cartoonist for the New Yorker . According to Sandys, the intention of the competition was "to fight the fire with humor". The competition is a "demonstration of strength and self-confidence. Before others point their fingers at us, we'll do it ourselves - and funnier. We're kosher anti-Semites ."

Political stance

Sandy describes himself, among other things, as a "political artist" who tries to incorporate an "enigmatic, subversive message" into commercial works. He feels that he belongs to the extreme Israeli left and takes part in demonstrations against the construction of the Israeli barriers , but nevertheless sees himself as a "good Israeli" and welcomes the artistic freedoms that the democratic state grants him. He broke off his military service after 18 months, during which he expressed intentions to commit suicide to a psychiatrist and therefore did not have to serve the second half of the service period.
