Israeli anti-Semitic cartoon competition
The Israeli Anti-Semitic Caricature Competition ( Hebrew : תחרות קריקטורות אנטישמיות ישראלית) was organized by two Israeli artists as a satirical response to the International Holocaust Caricature Competition of the Iranian state magazine Hamshahri .
Cartoonist Amitai Sandy and writer Eyal Zusman announced the competition on the website of Sandy's Tel Aviv- based graphic design company on February 14, 2006:
“We'll show the world we can do the best, sharpest, most offensive Jew hating cartoons ever published! (Zusman) No Iranian will beat us on our home turf! (Sandy) ”
“We're going to show the world that we can create the best, most poisonous, vilest anti-Semitic caricatures ever published! (Zusman) No Iranian will be able to beat us in this home game! (Sandy) "
Both cash prizes and “our great matzo bread , baked with the blood of Christian children ” were announced as prizes . The jury for the competition included Art Spiegelman ( mouse ), long-time caricaturist for the New Yorker .
The Jerusalem Post reported that Sandy sought to challenge bigotry in a humorous way . According to Sandy, the intention of the competition was to " fight the fire with humor ". The competition is a “demonstration of strength and self-confidence . Before others point their fingers at us, we'll do it ourselves - and funnier. We're kosher anti-Semites . ”According to the Haaretz newspaper , within three days of the competition announcement, Sandy was interviewed by more than thirty daily newspapers, two television channels and a US radio program that has over 450 local stations.
On April 6, the winner of the competition was announced on the competition website: Fiddler on the Roof by Aron Katz of Los Angeles , California. The cartoon depicted the well-known figure of the fiddler on the roof of the musical Anatevka sitting on the Brooklyn Bridge during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 .
Well-known anti-Semitic stereotypes such as Jewish world domination , the myth that Jews had horns, ritual murder legends as well as the Holocaust and Holocaust denial were dealt with in the caricatures sent in .
