Ammersum is a district of the Filsum municipality in the Leer district in East Frisia . The scattered settlement is a good two kilometers east of the core village of Filsum, to which it also belongs in church terms. The inhabitants of Ammersum are part of the Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul parish there .

Ammersum is first mentioned in the 10th century as in Ombriki or in Ambriki . Later names are super Ombertza fane (1447) and Amerse (1559). The current spelling has been in use since 1645. The place name is probably a combination of the Indo-European root am- (= river bed, ditch) with an Old Frisian noun corresponding to the Old Low German riki (= route, hedge, bushes) , so it would mean a long delimitation on the water .
