The murder of Amnon at Absalom's supper

Amnon was the eldest son of the Israelite King David in the Old Testament of the Bible .

Amnon was born in Hebron to David and the Jezreel wife Ahinoam . He spent his youth well protected with his family.

When he grew up, Amnon began to covet his younger half-sister Tamar ( 2 Sam 13.1  EU ), who was still a virgin at that time . The biblical narrative reports how Amnon even became ill and bedridden before he wanted Tamar (13.2 EU ). This gave his cousin Jonadab the idea that Tamar should bring him something to eat in this state and take care of him (13.5 EU ). Here Amnon raped his sister, although she offered to marry him (13.11-14 EU ), and then sent her away like a prostitute (13.15 EU ).

Tamar was found by her brother Absalom , and after she told him what had happened, Absalom took her in (13.20 EU ). A short time later, David found out about the outrage of his firstborn, but refused to have Amnon killed as punishment (13.21 EU ).

Two years passed during which Amnon still lived at court and was hated by Absalom for his deed. On the day of the sheep shearing , which took place in Baal-Hazor , in the ancestral region of Efraim , Absalom was supposed to bring his father's cattle there. He asked his father that Amnon would also go with him (13.23-27 EU ).

Outside of Baal-Hazor, Amnon and Absalom camped and celebrated a festival. Amnon got drunk as a result. Absalom took advantage of this and gave one of his men the order to kill Amnon. The order was carried out (13.28-29 EU ).

The act of Amnon set off a chain reaction that culminated in a bloody civil war . ( See under: Absalom )
