Amnon Lipkin-Chachak ( Hebrew אמנון ליפקין-שחק; * March 18, 1944 in Tel Aviv ; † December 19, 2012 in Jerusalem ) was a general of the Israeli armed forces , their chief of staff and politician in Israel.

life and career

He studied at a military boarding school and graduated from the Israel Defense Forces Command and Staff College for National Defense and took a course at the Naval Command and Staff College in the United States. He also graduated from Tel Aviv University with a degree in history .

Amnon Lipkin-Schahak joined the Paratrooper Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces in 1962 . He held various leadership positions from group commander to brigade commander . He completed a reorientation course for the tank corps and served as a commander for professional and reserve units. During the Six Day War he served as paratrooper commander and during the Yom Kippur War as deputy paratrooper brigade commander under the command of Colonel Uzi Yairi († 1975). After the Lebanon War in 1982 , Lipkin-Shahak commanded the sectors for Beirut and Schuf .

In 1983, Lipkin-Shahak was appointed commander of the Central Command and three years later he was appointed head of the reconnaissance force, GHQ. In 1991 he was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff; from 1995 to 1998 he was the 15th Chief of the General Staff. Lipkin-Shahak was elected to the Knesset as a member of the Center Party ( Mifleget ha-Merkas ) . He was Minister of Tourism in 1999 and Minister of Transport in 2000, until he retired from his political offices in March 2001.

Lipkin-Schahak died on December 19, 2012 of cancer. He was married and had five children. He received the Medal of Valor twice.
