Amok drive in Trier

During a rampage in Trier on December 1, 2020, a man intentionally drove a car through a busy pedestrian zone in Trier . Five people were killed and 15 injured in the rampage .

Course of events and investigations

On Tuesday, December 1, 2020, at around 1:46 p.m., a man drove a Land Rover Freelander 2 in zigzag lines through the pedestrian zone in downtown Trier, deliberately running over several people. Overall, he covered the distance from the Konstantinbasilika (earliest known point on the route) via Konstantin-, Brot- und Grabenstraße , Hauptmarkt and Simeonstraße and finally about 100 m through Christophstraße , where he was stopped by the police . That is a total of around one kilometer, of which around 650 m is a pedestrian zone. Four minutes after the first emergency call , the driver was stopped and arrested by the police. The driver resisted his arrest.

Five people were killed in the act, a nine and a half week old baby, its 45-year-old father and three women aged 25, 52 and 73 years.

The accused is a 51-year-old man of German nationality from Trier who was drunk with a value of 1.4 per mille at the time of the crime . The motive is unclear. He had not appeared to the police until then. The accused had loaned the SUV . According to the police, he did not spend the days before the crime in his home, but in the car. The Chief Public Prosecutor has indications that the accused may have a psychiatric clinical picture.

Reactions

The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance temporarily published an official warning for a "special situation " in Trier. For the following two days, mourning flags were ordered in Trier and the district of Trier-Saarburg , in which several other municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate participated, and a central place of mourning was set up.

On the evening of the act, a memorial prayer was held in Trier Cathedral . The following day a memorial service followed at the Porta Nigra , where hundreds of people remembered the victims.

A nationwide minute of silence took place on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at 1:46 p.m.
