Scientific name
Ampedus areolatus

Ampedus areolatus is a beetle from the family of click beetles (Elateridae) and the subfamily of Ampedinae . The species name areolatus comes from Latin and means "with small flat surfaces".

features

The hairy beetles reach a length of 4 to 5 millimeters, making them one of the smaller click beetles. The wings ( elytra ) have pale spots and are lighter in the front area. The mirror image pattern varies greatly within the species. The legs are yellow. The antennae, which are longer than the chest ( thorax ), are brown. The third antenna segment is twice as long as the second. Ampedus areolatus can be distinguished from the similarly small click beetle Ampedus luteolus by its paler color.

In a 1996 publication by Robert W. Poole and Patricia Gentili-Poole on a study of insects in North America, Ampedus areolatus and Ampedus pusio ( Germar , 1844) are considered to be a single identical click beetle species. This contradicts, for example, publications by Yves Bousquet (1991) on beetles in New Brunswick and Stewart B. Peck and Michael C. Thomas (1998) on beetles in Florida .

distribution

The distribution of the beetle is limited to North America, there in the eastern part from Texas to Québec . It can be observed especially in the months of May and June.
