The Amphenol Corporation ( NYSE : APH) is a producer of plug connectors for optical fibers and electrical cable and wire harnesses . Amphenol is a contraction of the original name American Phenolic Corp.
Amphenol was founded in 1932 by the Chicago entrepreneur Arthur Schmitt, his first products being sockets for radio tubes . During the Second World War, the company significantly expanded its scope of business through armaments contracts and thus became the dominant manufacturer of cable connections in the military sector. The APC compounds were introduced by Amphenol in the middle of the 20th century and were adopted by other manufacturers in the following years. Amphenol engineers also developed the widely used Bayonet Neill - Concelman BNC connector .
The company supplies various areas of the electronics market including military aerospace, industrial, automotive, information technology, cell phones, wireless infrastructure, broadband connections. There are branches in more than 60 locations worldwide. The company is part of the Midcap -Aktienindizes S & P 400 .
The registered office is in Wallingford , Connecticut . The branch with the highest turnover is Amphenol Aerospace (part of the former Bendix Corporation ) in Sidney , New York . This is the origin of the cylindrical D38999 connector.
In 1967, Amphenol bought the German Tuchel Kontakt GmbH , founded in 1948 by Ulrich Tuchel (inventor of the Tuchel connector ) , which has been trading as Amphenol-Tuchel ever since.
In October 2005, Amphenol acquired the connector division from Teradyne .
In 2010 bought the Amphenol LTW Technology Co., Ltd .
In France, Amphenol has taken over Socapex , a company that manufactures in the same market segment . In 2016, Amphenol took over FCI Asia , based in Singapore, for just under $ 1.3 billion .
