Amraal Lambert

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amraal Lambert , actually ǂGai-ǀnub (* around 1774 with Clanwilliam , Cape Colony ; † February 13, 1864 in Gobabis ), was the first captain of the Lambert-Nama ( Kaiǀkhauan ), a clan of the Orlam - Nama , in today's Namibia . Lambert headed the clan named after him, also known as the Amraal- Hottentots , from 1814 to 1864.

Lambert was born around Clanwilliam in what is now South Africa . He was a cousin of Jonker Afrikaner . He moved around 1814, together with the missionary Heinrich Schmelen of the London Missionary Society , from the Cape Colony to what would later become Namaland . Here he was baptized by him in Bethanien in 1815 and stayed at Schmelen's side for at least 14 more years.

Around 1840 Lambert moved to Naosanabis in the east of the country on the edge of the Kalahari . A year later he signed a peace treaty with the captain of the Red Nation Oasib Cornelis ǃNa-khomab . As early as 1855 Lambert left Leonardville with his clan and settled further north around Gobabis . In 1858 he was one of the signatories of the Hoachanas Peace Treaty .

Like almost all of his family, he died as a result of a smallpox epidemic .
