history

Main regional court

Since the Middle Ages, Opladen has been the seat of the highest Bergisch court, later known as the main regional court. On the one hand, this court was responsible for the Bergisch nobility and was therefore also called a knight's court, on the other hand it was the supreme court of all Bergisch regional courts. The previously orally handed down legal principles, according to which decisions were made, but also the considerable participation of estates and knighthood in the government of the country were recorded in the legal or knight book from the 14th century that has been handed down to this day. The importance of the main regional court only ended in the middle of the 16th century, when Roman law as the Jülich-Berg legal system began to prevail in the county of Berg.

Court of Justice and District Court

After 1810, under French rule, a peace court was set up in Opladen as the seat of the canton (district) . This continued to exist after Prussia took over government , albeit with a reduced area of responsibility. In 1879 the district court of Opladen took over the tasks of the peace court.

In 1882 the first part of today's old building was completed by the district building inspector Möller from Solingen, with the proviso that it would be used by the judiciary from July 1, 1882. The building was expanded in 1911–1914 and supplemented by the new building used today in 1965–1968.

After the district town of Opladen was incorporated into Leverkusen in 1975, the court was renamed the Leverkusen District Court .

Superior courts

The regional court above the Leverkusen District Court is the Cologne Regional Court , which in turn is subordinate to the Cologne Higher Regional Court .
