The seat of the court was one of the privileges that Wipperfürth received at the beginning of the 13th century in the later Duchy of Berg . In 1216, Wipperfürth was given its own jurisdiction with a city court consisting of 13 councilors as lay judges. The court court in Düsseldorf served as the court of appeal .

The judiciary was reformed during the Napoleonic era. In 1812 the city court became a peace court , and in 1820 a district court . Friedensgericht Lindlar the area of today's city Overath to it. This also remained in the times of the Prussian Rhine Province .

After the municipal reorganization in 1975 and the associated closure of the courts in Lindlar and Lennep , the Wipperfürth court took over parts of their areas of responsibility. Since 1976, the district court district of Wipperfürth has included the areas of the cities of Wipperfürth, Hückeswagen and Radevormwald and the municipality of Lindlar.

Exact documentation of where the court met throughout history is not available. It is believed that the old town hall on the market was the place of trials. Open-air negotiations are also known. The district court was later housed on Marktstrasse. After the Wipperfürth district was dissolved in 1932, the old district office on Gaulstrasse became vacant and, from 1933, the new seat of the district court.

The court has been located in a new building in the same place since 1983. Parts of the old district office were preserved, so the old tower and the window element with the wood carvings and paintings were integrated into the new building.
