Amund Dietzel (born February 28, 1891 in Kristiania , † February 9, 1974 ) was an American tattoo artist .

Life

After the death of his father in 1905, Dietzel joined the Norwegian merchant fleet . On the first trips between Canada and England for the purpose of transporting wood , Dietzel began to tattoo his comrades with a self-made device . After a shipwreck in July 1907, however, Dietzel and other members of the crew decided to work in the timber stores.

Two months later, Dietzel moved to the United States and settled in New Haven , Connecticut . He traded his hand tools for an electric tattoo machine . Dietzel became a close friend of an English immigrant named William Grimshaw. Both traveled to carnival events as tattooed men, appeared in show booths and sold photos of themselves, and tattooed customers between shows. At the age of 23, Dietzel started a business next to the newly built Hotel Wisconsin in Milwaukee and soon had a reputation for being the area's leading tattoo artist.

In 1964, at the age of 73, Dietzel sold his tattoo shop to friend Gib "Tatts" Thomas. However, both continued to tattoo together until the local council banned this in the city with effect from July 1, 1967. Dietzel died of leukemia on February 9, 1974. He was buried in Pinelawn Memorial Park.
