The area at the brickworks of Groß-Zimmer , also known as the “clay pit near Groß-Zimmer”, is a large natural monument in the district of Groß-Zimmer in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in southern Hesse.

location

The natural monument is located in the natural area of the Gersprenzniederung (Eastern Lower Main Plain) in the west of Groß-Zimmer, a little north of the state road 3115. Its area is about 5.2 hectares. There are some buildings to the west and east. Outside the natural monument, the route of the Darmstadt Ost – Groß-Zimmer railway line, which was closed in 1982, runs to the north, and all the way up to the railway line, plots are planted with locust trees and mountain ash . A high-voltage line runs through the protected area .

Protection purpose

The former clay pits were already listed as a protected landscape component from 1983 . By ordinance of August 7, 1991, published in the Darmstädter Echo on August 10, 1991, they were placed under nature protection as a natural monument . They should be preserved for scientific reasons as well as for their individuality and beauty.

description

In the uneven clay pit area, there is a larger meadow in the center, which is surrounded by forest-like trees. It consists of robinia, common oak , silver birch , sycamore maple , willow and hornbeam . The currant bushes that occur in the forest probably come from garden waste. At the edge of the forest there is a border of bushes with blackthorn and hawthorn . Lots of frogs and birds live in the area, and a small mouse tail grows on moist soil . The protected area itself has no open water areas. Shallow ponds have been created by the NABU to the north .
