Anatoly Jakowlewitsch Kartaschow ( Russian Анатолий Яковлевич Карташов ; born August 25, 1932 in Pervoi Sadowoje , Voronezh Oblast , Soviet Union ; † December 11, 2005 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Soviet aspirant cosmonaut . He belonged to the first cosmonaut group of the Soviet Union , but retired prematurely for medical reasons without having participated in a space flight.

Life

Training to become a pilot

After graduating from school in 1948, Kartaschow trained as an aircraft mechanic in Voronezh . At the same time, he made the pilot's license. He joined the Air Force of the Soviet Union on October 15, 1952 and was trained at the Chuguyev pilot school , which he graduated in December 1954. After that he served as a fighter pilot.

Selection and training as a cosmonaut

When the Soviet Union was looking for military pilots from August 1959 to train them as space travelers, Kartashov was shortlisted. The last examinations took place in Moscow from March to May 1960. On June 17th, he was the last to join the First Cosmonaut Group of the Soviet Union .

Since this group was too large to be able to train all of them at the same time, six candidates were selected for the first flights of the Vostok spaceship . In addition to Yuri Gagarin , Kartaschow also belonged to this elite group . However, after a centrifuge test in July 1960, he was found to be bruising. He had to leave the Vostok group and was replaced by Grigory Nelyubov . Kartaschow then trained again with the other cosmonauts, but was formally released from the cosmonaut corps in April 1961 for medical reasons.

Another military career

Kartashov's exclusion from the cosmonaut corps had no negative effects on his further career. From May 18, 1961, he served again as a pilot in the Soviet Air Force, and from 1966 as a test pilot.

In September 1985 Kartashov resigned from military service with the rank of colonel . He then worked as a test pilot at Antonow and flew the types An-24 , An-26 , An-30 and An-32 .

Kartaschow died on December 11, 2005 after a long illness and was buried in the Berkowezkyj Cemetery in Kiev.
