Other times e. V. - Initiatives for the Church Year is a nationwide non-profit association based in Hamburg . The declared aim of the ecumenical initiative, founded in 1997, is to raise awareness of the times and festivals of the liturgical year to a wider public. All surpluses are distributed as donations to church and church-related projects.

history

The association was founded in 1997 by the theologian and journalist Hinrich CG Westphal, a student and friend of the Hamburg theology professor Helmut Thielicke . In 2001 Westphal gave up his position as head of the Public Service Office of the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hamburg and took over the chairmanship and editor-in-chief of Andere Zeiten .

In October 2009, Westphal handed over his position as editor-in-chief of the association to the theologian Henning Kiene . His successor was Pastor Thomas Kärst in November 2010. Journalist and book author Frank Hofmann has been editor-in-chief at Andere Zeiten since 2014 . In April 2015 the Hamburg pastor Jörg Herrmann replaced the founder as chairman of the board of the association, Westphal was made honorary chairman.

financing

The association finances its actions through donations and the distribution of publications (books, calendars, postcards) and Christian missionary sacred objects. In the 2017 financial year, the association donated around 1.37 million euros to support 239 Christian projects. The association has donated over ten million euros since 1997. His most successful campaigns are the calendar Der Andere Advent , which had a circulation of 650,000 copies in 2017, and a seven centimeter tall and around 100 grams heavy bronze angel, of which over 1.3 million pieces have been sold since 2000.

Publications and promotions

The association became known to a broader readership through its calendar Der Andere Advent and through the fasting campaign Seven Weeks Live Different .

The Other Advent campaign was launched in 1995 on Westphal's initiative. She invites the participants to meditate daily and accompanies this with an advent calendar for adults. It was published in 1995 in a test edition of 4,000 copies by the Public Service Office of the North Elbe Church in Hamburg. Two years later, 60,000 copies have already been sold. After its founding, the Verein Andere Zeiten took over the publishing house. The Advent calendar is divided into five thematic sections and - following the church year - covers the period from the first Advent to the apparition of the Lord (January 6th). In 2004, 200,000 copies were printed for the tenth edition, and in 2017 production amounted to 650,000 copies. The campaign now also has cooperation partners in Switzerland and Austria. In 2017 the “Other Advent for Children” was published for the first time. He brings girls and boys between the ages of seven and eleven closer to Advent: with stories, experiments, comics and games.

Living differently for seven weeks is a non-denominational fasting action of the association, which has been taking place every year since 2002 during the Passion . During this time, seven supporting fasting letters are sent to around 20,000 participants every week, which contain , among other things, background information on the biblical story as well as experience reports from fasters, poems and caricatures . In addition, the association runs an Internet forum during the Passion period and during Advent , which recorded around 20,000 contributions during Lent 2017.

In 2017, the series of specials act differently also premiered. The magazine is published three times a year with a print run of around 10,000 and each issue is dedicated to an ethical topic: After “Forgiveness”, “Love” was published, followed by “Justice” in January 2018. The founding team includes the CEO of Andere Zeiten, Jörg Herrmann , the EKD cultural representative Johann Hinrich Claussen and Andere Zeiten - editor-in-chief Frank Hofmann .

Also new in 2017 was the other places project , which combines a book with a web app. In this, users can find and enter places that relate to meaningful situations, feelings and experiences in their life.

In 2009, the association carried out the Mach mal Sonntag campaign , in which more than 4,500 trendy pubs and restaurants across Germany advertised free postcards with “Grüß Gott”, “Sonntagsschön” and “get free” for the 7th day of the week . The campaign is accompanied by a book entitled “Sundays - Invention of Freedom”. The different aspects of Sunday are described in 52 chapters on 144 pages, from breakfast in the morning to the “ TV crime scene ” in the evening.

Since 2008 the association has been awarding the Other Times Mission Prize , endowed with 15,000 euros, which honors original campaigns to spread and consolidate the Christian faith in Germany. The Other Times Journalist Prize has been awarded since 2003 to journalists who have dealt with issues of the church year in a remarkable way. The winners include Michael Gleich , Boris Reitschuster , Bastian Obermayer , Henning Sußebach and Andrea Jeska .

The magazine Andere Zeiten , which aims to explain the festivals and themes of the church year in a contemporary way, is sent out three times a year free of charge. The circulation is 180,000 (as of July 2017).
