Gustav von Girsewald (Major General, 1812)

Baron Gustav Wilhelm Heinrich Ernst von Girsewald (born December 20, 1812 in York, Ireland ; † July 9, 1871 in Braunschweig ) was a German officer who was in command of the Duke's Braunschweig Infantry Regiment 92 from 1861 to 1868 .

Life

Girsewald was the son of the ducal major general and chief stableman Conrad Alexander Gustav von Girsewald (1785–1864) and his wife Katharina, née Raines (1787–1857).

Military career
On May 1, 1827, Girsewald entered the military as a cadet , was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on April 20, 1828 and joined the Leib battalion on May 23, 1829 . On 21 February 1830 he became a second lieutenant on November 18, 1835 to, adjutant of the 3rd Battalion of Infantry Regiment and on May 17, 1836 First Lieutenant appointed. On November 29, 1841 Girsewald was adjutant in the field corps, on September 11, 1842 captain and took part in the war against Denmark in 1848/49 . Subsequently, on November 9th, he became chief of the 3rd Company of the 1st Infantry Battalion, on April 8th, 1854 he was awarded the character of a major and regular staff officer, and from February 16, 1855, he was major and commander of the Leib-Battalion. On April 25, 1860 he was appointed lieutenant colonel and on December 12, 1861, he was appointed colonel and commander of the Duke Braunschweig Infantry Regiment. On June 16, 1866 he took part in the procession to Bavaria , was briefly commander of the Braunschweigisch-Altenburg Brigade from August 7 to September 3, 1866, before resigning as a major general on June 17, 1868.

The
Girsewald family had been married to Charlotte, née von Bülow (1819–1876), with whom he had a daughter Katharina (1858–1922) since July 16, 1843. His younger brother was Alexander Freiherr von Girsewald (1815–1890), Major General of the Duke of Brunswick and head stable master.
