Conrad Alexander Gustav von Girsewald , Baron von Girsewald since 1827 , (born June 6, 1785 in Braunschweig ; † January 23, 1864 ibid) was a German major general , head stable master and Brunswick chamberlain .

Life

At the age of 14, von Girsewald entered the Braunschweig military service as a junker with the von Griesheim infantry regiment . In 1803 he was made a second lieutenant . After the occupation of Braunschweig by the French troops in 1806, he initially refused to enter the French service and was interned in Metz. At the beginning of March 1808 he finally joined the 1st Westphalian Cuirassier Regiment in Kassel , where he was promoted to Premier Lieutenant on August 25, 1808 . With his brother Wilhelm he joined the Dörnberg uprising and Ferdinand Wilhelm von Dörnberg on April 22, 1809 in Homberg as leader of a squadron . They fled together and joined the hussar regiment of the black crowd , the Braunschweig Freikorps of Duke Friedrich Wilhelm von Braunschweig . Here he was appointed orderly officer. Von Girsewald was wounded in the storming of Halberstadt and then went with the corps into English service. In 1815 he was appointed Rittmeister and recalled from the campaign on the Iberian Peninsula to take command of the regiment's depot squadron in England. With this he took part in the fighting in the Netherlands in 1815 and was then put on waiting . Duke Charles II appointed him his orderly officer in 1824. In 1826 he was promoted to major and in 1827 appointed chamberlain and wing adjutant , at the same time being elevated to the rank of baron. Under his new sovereign, Duke Wilhelm , he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1830 and was vice stable master from 1831. He then became a colonel in 1837 and major general in 1844. The foundation of the "Braunschweigisch-Hanoverian Association for the Promotion of Domestic Horse Breeding" in 1837 is due to his initiative. This existed until 1848 and participated in horse racing. In the same year, von Girsewald was released into retirement as chamberlain and head stable master with the title " Excellence ".

family

Von Girsewald was married to Katharina, née Raines (1787–1857), with whom he had at least two sons, Major General Gustav (1812–1871) and Alexander (1815–1890), Major General and Head Stable Master. These also served in the Brunswick army.
