Anders Lindstedt (born June 27, 1854 in the Församling Sundborn, parish Falun ; † May 16, 1939 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish mathematician and astronomer.

Life

Lindstedt studied from 1872 at the University of Lund , where he received his doctorate in 1877 and was then a lecturer in astronomy. During his studies he was an observator at the Hamburg observatory in 1874/5 . In 1879 he went for seven years as a lecturer at the then Russian University of Dorpat , where he dealt with both theoretical (for example three-body problem ) and observational astronomy. At first he was an observer at the observatory, from 1883 professor of mathematics. In 1886 he returned to Sweden, where he became professor of mathematics and technical mechanics at the Royal Stockholm University of Technology . There he dealt in particular with actuarial mathematics such as the theory of pension funds and was also temporarily a state inspector for insurance. From 1909 he switched completely to the insurance industry and became chairman of a committee that carried out the statistical studies necessary for the state pension fund established in 1913. From 1909 to 1916 he was also a judge at the highest Swedish administrative court and after the First World War one of the international judges who, according to the Versailles Treaty , regulated the distribution of the state social security funds between Germany, Poland and France. From 1917 to 1924 he was chairman of the arbitration committee for disability insurance in Sweden. In 1924 he retired, but remained active as an insurance scientist.

His work on celestial mechanics influenced Henri Poincaré . The Lindstedt-Poincaré method is named after them. It is used for the uniform approximation of periodic solutions of ordinary differential equations in cases where the usual perturbation theory fails, and removes secular terms from perturbation calculus .

He was a corresponding member of the Institute of Actuaries in London. In 1886 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
