The Andersen primary school is a public primary school on Kattegatstrasse in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen , near the Wollankstrasse S-Bahn station . The name can be traced back to the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen . The building, which was erected as the 4th Pankow community school , is a listed building monument.

history

The school building was built in 1898 based on a design by Haikradt. In 1899 it was opened as the 4th Pankow community school. During the First World War , school operations were stopped and temporary barracks were set up. In order to resume school operations, the school received electricity and a bell system. In 1938, after the district came to the Wedding district through the district reform of 1938 , the school was renamed the 39th Wedding elementary school . The school was badly damaged during the Second World War and reopened as a girls' school after the war. In 1951 it was renamed the 27th elementary school with grades 1-6 . The school was given its current name in 1954. In 2009 the sports hall was renovated.

School profile

The Andersen Elementary School is an all-day school in an open form. It has a special focus on social, creative and democratic learning. The school tries to teach democratic principles early on. For example, the class council, the student council and the student jury meet regularly. Creative learning is promoted through various projects such as theater projects, the choir, regular handicraft days and a writing workshop.

building

The three-story school building was oriented towards the street. From the main building there are two wing structures, which lead away from the street, so that a schoolyard closed on three sides is created. The building is characterized by its traditional late classicist construction. This construction is reflected in the clinker brick cladding and the regularly lined up segmental arched windows. The Gothic decorations on the facade, however, are more reminiscent of the Brandenburg brick Gothic. The cornices and window sills are accented with black glazed bricks. The area of the auditorium stands out from the facade with its large tracery windows, which consist of individual pointed arch windows, round openings and plastered spandrels.
