André-Max Leroy (born September 11, 1892 in Le Raincy , Département Seine-Saint-Denis , France, † 1978 in Eaubonne , Département Val-d'Oise , France) was a French livestock scientist and was the first president of the European Association for twelve years Animal Production ( EAAP ).

Live and act

He studied agricultural science at the Institut National Agronomique (INA) in Paris and graduated with a degree in agriculture. This was followed by stays in the French Protectorate of Morocco and in French West Africa . He later became an assistant for anatomy and general physiology at the INA, then a tutor for animal breeding and husbandry. In 1939 he received the professorship for animal sciences and worked in the field of animal nutrition with a system of feed equivalents for evaluating various feeds based on barley. To this end, he set up a test station, trained many specialists in the feed industry and was their scientific advisor. He also advocated using the results of the milk and fat performance testing of cows to evaluate related breeding animals. In some publications with multiple editions he dealt with the economic production of beef, pork and sheep's wool.

Leroy tried to found a European umbrella organization for animal breeding as early as 1939. He succeeded in 1949 at the 5th International Congress on Animal Production in Paris, when 12 national associations took this step. Prof. Leroy was elected the first President of the European Association for Animal Production - he filled this honorary position for two periods up to 1961. He was also the founding president of the French Animal Production Association in 1949. In addition, in 1951 he campaigned for the formation of the European Committee for Milk Performance Control and took care of the internationally comparable determination and evaluation of the results.
