André-Philippe Futa

André-Philippe Futa (* 1946 in Miabi ; † October 1, 2009 in Paris ) was a politician in the Democratic Republic of the Congo .

biography

After attending school, Futa first studied agricultural engineering at the University of Florida and graduated with a master's degree . He then graduated from the Oklahoma State University System with a degree in economics , where he earned a PhD . After returning to Zaire , he began his professional career in the 1970s as an assistant professor at the National University of Zaire. Later he was director of the East Africa department at the African Development Bank (Banque africaine de développement).

After the murder of Laurent-Désiré Kabila and the assumption of office by his son Joseph Kabila as President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Futa was appointed Minister of Agriculture in his cabinet in April 2001. In the following years he first took over the office of Minister of Economics in 2002 and then, after a government reshuffle in 2003, first the Office of the Minister for Industry and small and medium-sized enterprises and then the Office of the Minister of Finance.

In 2004 he founded the party of the National Alliance for Unity (Parti de l'alliance nationale pour l'unité) and was its president until his death. As such, he played a key role in Kabila's election as President in July 2006 through his role as coordinator of the Alliance for the Presidential Majority (Alliance de la majorité présidentielle) and became one of the President's closest advisers.

In 2007 he was elected Senator to represent his home province of Kasaï-Oriental . A year later, Kabila appointed him to a key position in the cabinet formed by Prime Minister Antoine Gizenga as Minister for the Economy and Foreign Trade . He also held this office in the government of Gizenga's successor as Prime Minister, Adolphe Muzito , from October 10, 2008.

In his function as Minister of Economic Affairs and Foreign Trade, he took part in the 12th America - South Africa Summit in Venezuela at the end of September 2009 with representatives from 60 countries from both regions. On the return flight he died unexpectedly in a hotel in Paris .

Interim president of the Parti de l'alliance nationale pour l'unité (PANU) was the deputy Crispin Kalala Mpotoyi.
