André Laberge

André Laberge (born August 23, 1940 in Beauharnois ) is a Canadian Benedictine monk , organist and harpsichordist.

Life

Laberge studied at the University of Montreal and entered the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac in 1960 . There he worked as an organist and was ordained a priest in 1969. He then studied at the Montreal Conservatory with Bernard Lagacé (organ), Kenneth Gilbert (harpsichord), Gilles Tremblay (music theory) and Françoise Aubut (counterpoint). In the summer of 1971 he continued his organ training at the Harlem Music Academy with Piet Kee and Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini . He graduated in 1972 with first prizes in the subjects of organ, harpsichord and music theory.

In 1972 and 1973 Laberge gave organ and harpsichord courses for the Canadian Amateur Musicians Society (CAMMAC) at the Otter Lake Music Center , and from 1974 to 1977 and 1980 he also taught at the Orford Music Center for Youth and Music . With scholarships from the Arts Council of Canada , he studied organ with Xavier Darasse at the Toulouse Conservatory and harpsichord with Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam from 1977 to 1979 .

Since his return to Canada, Laberge has been giving private lessons in addition to his duties as organist, novice master and abbot of the monastery of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac and has performed as a soloist with the Société Radio-Canada , Télé-Québec and the Canadian Institute of Music at the festival international de Lanaudière and events by Pro Organo , Les Amis de l'orgue de Québec and Ars Organi . From 1975 he recorded several albums as a harpsichordist and organist.
