Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini (born October 7, 1929 in Bologna ; † July 11, 2017 there ) was an Italian organist , harpsichordist and musicologist .

Life

Tagliavini studied at the Conservatories of Bologna and Paris and at the University of Padua . He then taught organ at the Conservatories of Bolzano , Parma and Bologna. From 1965 until his retirement in 2000 he was a full professor for musicology at the University of Friborg in Switzerland.

For his concert activities and his recordings, he received the Premio della discografia italiana in 1972 and 1973 and the record price of the German Phono Academy in 1976 . For a recording of works by Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli on the historic organ of San Petronio in Bologna, together with the Dutch organist Liuwe Tamminga , he was awarded the Antonio Vivaldi Prize by the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice in 1991 . In 1982 he received the Tyrolean Eagle Order in Gold in Innsbruck . In the same year he became a member of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia .

In addition to his work as an interpreter, Tagliavini also emerged with musicological writings. As editor he published works by Frescobaldi , Zipoli , Mozart, among others .

In 1996 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Organists in London made him an honorary member.

Tagliavini owned an important collection of historical keyboard instruments, which was documented in John Henry van der Meer's monograph Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini, Clavicembali e spinette dal XVI al XIX secolo (Bologna 1986). It has been open to the wider public since 2010.
