Andrés Duany (born September 7, 1949 in New York City ) is an American architect, urban planner and co-founder of the New Urbanism movement .

Life

Duany grew up in Cuba until 1960 . He received a BA in Architecture and Urban Planning from Princeton University . After a year at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he received a master's degree in architecture from the Yale School of Architecture.

Professional development

In 1977 Duany co-founded the architecture firm Arquitectonica in Miami: Other owners were his wife Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Bernardo Fort-Brescia, Laurinda Hope Spear and Hervin Romney. Arquitectonica became famous for his style, whose signature is considered “dramatic”, expressive “high tech” and modernistic.

Duany and Plater-Zyberk founded Duany Plater Zyberk & Company (DPZ) in 1980 , whose headquarters are also in Miami, Florida. DPZ became the leader of the American New Urbanism Movement .

Duany is a co-founder and board member emeritus of the Congress for the New Urbanism , which was founded in 1993. He is also co-author of the books: "Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream" and "The New Civic Art."

Duany coined the term transect in urban planning.
