Andrallus spinidens is a type of bug from the subfamily Asopinae , which belongs to the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).

features

The approximately 16 mm long bugs have a dark brown base color. The pronotum of the pronotum is pointed at the sides. The dark brown colored label (scutellum) has a yellowish lower end. The hemielytras are dark brown, while the connexive (part of the abdomen visible on the side) is colored yellow. The legs are light brown to reddish in color.

Occurrence

Andrallus spinidens is widespread in the tropics and subtropics. In Europe, the type of bug occurs in Italy and Greece. The distribution area in Asia includes Iran, India, China, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Furthermore, the species occurs in New Guinea and in Australia (Queensland), in the Afrotropis and in North America in the southern United States (Florida, Texas) and in Mexico.

Way of life

The bugs are particularly common in rice and cotton plantations . They predatorily feed on arthropods , especially caterpillars, which are considered to be agricultural pests . These include Cnaphalocrocis medinalis , Eurema hecabe , the cotton capsule owl ( Helicoverpa armigera ), Melanitis leda ismene , Mythimna separata , Naranga aenescens , Spodoptera litura and Spodoptera mauritia . According to recent reports, the leaf beetle Zygogramma bicolorata is also on the menu of the bug species. Andrallus spinidens is considered a beneficial insect whose potential for biological pest control is the subject of several scientific studies.

The species usually trains 3–4 generations per year. She hibernates as an imago.

etymology

The species name spinidens is derived from Latin: spina = "thorn" or "sting" and dens = "tooth".
