Andrea Rossi (entrepreneur)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andrea Rossi (born June 3, 1950 ) is an Italian inventor and entrepreneur and convicted fraudster. He is the inventor of the energy catalyst (also known as E-Cat ), which he presented as a nuclear fusion reactor for cold fusion .

He claimed to have invented a process to turn organic waste into oil. In 1978 he founded the Petroldragon company for this purpose. In the early 1990s the company was dissolved and Rossi was convicted of unauthorized disposal of toxins and tax evasion.

biography

Andrea Rossi was born on June 3, 1950 in Milan and graduated in 1973 from the University of Milan in philosophy with a thesis on the connection between Albert Einstein's theory of relativity and the phenomenology according to Edmund Husserl . Rossi is married to Maddalena Pascucci.

Companies

Petroldragon

In 1974 Rossi applied for a patent for an incinerator. It described the recycling of waste and was published in Milan in the Tecniche Nuove . He then founded Petroldragon, a company that would extract oil from waste. In the 1990s, there were allegations of dumping of toxins and allegations of tax evasion. His property was confiscated and Rossi remained in custody pending trial. Rossi spent four years in prison. The government of Lombardy spent over 40 million euros to dispose of 70,000 tons of toxic waste that Petroldragon had improperly dumped. The Mayor of Lacchiarella , Luigi Acerbi, said: "In the years Rossi worked here, as far as we know, not a single drop of oil was produced."

According to his own account, he was the victim of an attack by the oil industry, which felt threatened by his invention and put pressure on the Italian government to destroy Petroldragon and its reputation. He was detained several times, but was acquitted each time. There are now several plants around the world based on his patent that have successfully converted waste into biodiesel, including in Edmonton, Canada.

Electricity from waste heat

In the USA, Rossi founded the consulting firm Leonardo Technologies, Inc. (LTI). He secured an armaments contract to generate electricity from waste heat with the help of thermoelectric generators. This is similar to the heating and cooling elements that are based on the Peltier effect , but whose efficiency is only a few percent. Rossi claimed his devices could achieve 20% efficiency. He sent 27 thermoelectric devices to a research and development center for evaluation. 19 devices produced no electricity at all, the remaining less than 1 watt each instead of the expected 800–1000 watts.

Energy catalyst (so-called "cold fusion")

In January 2011, Andrea Rossi and Sergio Focardi presented a device that is said to generate energy profitably through cold fusion . Allegedly he could already offer a one-megawatt reactor for 1.5 million euros for sale.

The so-called energy catalyst should, as Rossi claimed in an interview, generate energy on the basis of a “weak nuclear reaction”. However, when the international patent application was made, the device was rejected as not patentable because its functionality contradicted the generally recognized laws of physics. The application would have to be confirmed either experimentally or theoretically. Journalists were not allowed to examine the core of the reactor.

Rossi claims that in his "reactor" nuclei of nickel and hydrogen atoms fuse together at low temperatures (1400 ° C). Claude Petitjean from the Swiss Paul Scherrer Institute doubts this because of the Coulomb barrier , which prevents particle fusion: "I think it is out of the question that Mr. Rossi's reactor generates energy on the basis of nuclear fusion."

Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics have a similar opinion : "If the generally recognized laws of physics describe nature correctly, then 'cold fusion' is not possible in these facilities," and Ulrich Samm , head of nuclear fusion research at Forschungszentrum Jülich : "What Mr. Rossi does belongs to the category of charlatanism ."
